Reverend James Cone, authored a book entitled Black Theology and Black Power. Within this book, Rev. James Cone articulates how he curated his Black Liberation theology:
“For me, the burning theological question was, how can I reconcile Christianity and Black Power, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s idea of nonviolence and Malcolm X’s ‘by any means necessary’ philosophy? The writing of Black Theology and Black Power was the beginning of my search for a resolution of that dilemma.”
Ever since we were brought to the Americas and the Caribbean islands via slave ships, our people have been trying to obtain liberation from our oppressed condition. From slave abolitionists. To Civil Rights icons/leaders. Anti-segregationists. The Civil Rights Movement. Black Power rhetoric. To the Black Lives Matter Movement, which was founded in my generation. It seems we are exhausting all of our social, academic, economic, religious, and political options, to palate true liberation, as a people. However, what or who, are we trying to be liberated from?
Racism. See, if this virulent intangible phenomenon, called racism, was non-extant, then everything would be perfect, no? Is racism the root of all African-American oppression? Let me take care to say: I am cognizant that prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race, predicated on the belief that one’s own race is superior, is definitely a thing. Racism is as American as apple pie. With that said, is racism, coupled with white supremacist ideals, the root of all our problems/oppression? Were the Romans the root of all Israelite oppression?
May I submit that Black America is neglecting or denying a pertinent crisis of identity? May I also posit the notion that, once we know who we are, we will know Whose we are? That having intimate knowledge of self, inextricably combined with having an intimate relationship with our Creator, will bring us closer to freedom? Freedom from our own rebellion against God? Freedom from our own lawless, sinful behavior? Freedom from the covenant curses?
Once we fathom that we are Israelites in covenant with Yahweh, The God of Israel, then salvation from our condition, will be ever nigh.
Blacks in America. My dear, beloved people. We have become accustomed to bywords like Colored and Negro. The world calls us racist epithets. We call ourselves dehumanizing words, like the N-word. However, Yahweh calls us Israelites, His chosen covenant people. Which will we choose? Will we wholly embrace our God-given identity, as an Israelite? Will we wholly embrace the Hebrew Israelite Messiah, Yahshua? Will we wholly embrace our Hebrew language, our Hebrew culture, our Hebrew history, our Hebrew heritage, the Hebrew Bible?
How much more marching must we do, to be liberated from the curses of Deuteronomy 28:15–68? How many more protest signs must we innovate, to be liberated from the curses? How many more Black Power fists must we raise in the air, to be liberated from the curses? How much more boycotting must we do, to be liberated from the curses? How many more full-throated, “No justice, no peace!” or “Hands up, don’t shoot!” slogans must we yell into the air, to be liberated from the curses? How many more votes must we cast, to be liberated from the curses? How rich must we become, to be liberated from the curses? How much celebrity and fame must we amass, to be liberated from the curses? Can we sing the curses away? Can we dance the curses away? Can we punchline the curses away?
Who has the solution? Our God Yahweh does.
How long have we been following the Frank Sinatra gospel? The rhetoric of “I did it my way?” Black America, has our way brought us freedom? There is a way that is upright before a man, but the ways of death are at the end of it afterward. Per Proverbs 14:12. Have we tried Yah’s Way? Yahweh, The God of Israel, gives us the actionable solution, in regards to being liberated from these covenant curses, and to experience covenant blessings! I’ll let The Word have the last word. The question I leave us with us, What would happen if we relinquish of ways, and begin to embrace Yah’s Way?
“If you listen closely to what Yahweh your God says, observing all His commandments which I am giving you today, Yahweh your God will raise you high above all the nations on earth; and all the following blessings will be yours in abundance — — if you will do what Yahweh your God says.
A blessing on you in the city, and a blessing on you in the countryside.
A blessing on the fruit of your body, the fruit of your land and the fruit of your livestock — — the young of your cattle and flocks.
A blessing on your grain-basket and kneading bowl.
A blessing on you when you go out, and a blessing on you when you come in.
Yahweh will cause your enemies attacking you to be defeated before you; they will advance on you one way, and flee before you seven ways.
Yahweh will order a blessing to be with you in your barns and in everything you undertake; He will bless you in the land Yahweh your God is giving you.
Yahweh will establish you as a people separated out for Himself as He has sworn to you — — if you will observe the commandments of Yahweh your God and follow His ways. Then all the peoples on earth will see that Yahweh’s Name, His Presence, is with you; so that they will be afraid of you.
Yahweh will give you great abundance of good things — — of the fruit of your body, the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your land in the land Yahweh swore to your ancestors to give you.
Yahweh will open for you His good treasure, the sky, to give your land it’s rain at the right seasons and to bless everything you undertake. You will lend to many nations and not borrow.
Yahweh will make you the head and not the tail; and you will be only above and never below — — if you will listen to, observe and obey the commandments of Yahweh your God and not turn away from any of the words I am ordering you today, neither to the right nor to the left, to follow after other gods and serve them.”
